A.N.B.C., is a not for profit organization that began while working midnights in the Roseland community on Chicago's Southside, with the help of my partner. We wanted to provide inner-city youth with an camping opportunity to get away from the street life of Chicago. We taught them how to pitch a tent, bait a hook, and cooking over an open flame, while working with youth from different backgrounds, beliefs and neighborhoods in Chicago.
Camping and fishing was one of the methods we found, (similar to a retreat), that helped them develop new skills, and lasting friendships while working together to help improve the conditions in their communities. We started out by offering them one weekend each month during their summer vacations.
It soon blossomed into a year round project that saw them planting flowers for seniors in the summer, and raking leaves and shoveling snow in the winter as their way of earning a return trip to camp and fish their next spring vacation.
